Developments at Maasvlakte 2

The most striking example of innovation and sustainable development in the port of Rotterdam is Maasvlakte 2.

Container Exchange Route

The Port of Rotterdam Authority has initiated the construction the Container Exchange Route (CER). The CER will link the container companies on the Maasvlakte with one another and enable them to minimise container exchange costs. The CER merges container flows so trains, barges and feeder vessels no longer have to visit all the different terminals. Benefits: better connectivity, reduced time spent in port and reduced costs.

Prinses Amaliaviaduct

Due to the limited traffic volumes in the first years following the commercial opening of Maasvlakte 2, it was initially decided to place a single-level junction on the Maasvlakteweg near the Prinses Amaliahaven. Various roads converge at this single-level junction, in addition to a railway line, a pipeline corridor and the future Container Exchange Route (CER).

New radar tower

The Port of Rotterdam Authority is having a radar tower built on the seawall along the Princes Maximaweg at Maasvlakte 2. The tower is 70 metres tall and will take over radar cover from radar post 2, as the former lighthouse on the Europaweg was known in the Traffic Guidance System.

Offshore Center Rotterdam (OCR): new land for wind farms at sea

The Port of Rotterdam is creating space for a cluster where companies that are involved in offshore activities will be able to work together. It is for this reason that 70 hectares of land is being prepared in the Prinses Alexiahaven at Maasvlakte 2. The Offshore Centre will soon provide space for companies that construct foundations for wind turbines at sea and for companies that take down oil and gas platforms.

Cable connection for offshore wind farms

A cable connection between the ‘Hollandse Kust (south)’ wind farm and the Maasvlakte is to be realised by grid manager TenneT. This will soon allow the electricity generated by the wind farms on the North Sea to be brought ashore. Soon enough clean electricity will be flowing inshore to power 1.6 million households.
